Influencing Public Policy for Animal Welfare

Public policy processes are often complex and challenging, particularly within national jurisdictions. For civil society organisations focused on animal welfare, these complications can limit their ability to influence legislative outcomes. However, through a pro bono collaboration with a leading international law firm, Eurogroup for Animals successfully navigated these barriers. This partnership provided crucial training to ten founders and directors of Romanian NGOs focused on animal and environmental welfare, equipping them with tools to actively engage in Romania’s legislative process and enhance animal welfare advocacy.

Supporting Animal Welfare in Europe

Eurogroup for Animals, an influential advocate for animal rights across Europe, collaborates with an extensive network of NGOs to drive legal reforms that elevate animal welfare standards. Their mission involves creating societal change that ensures better treatment of animals through informed and strategic legislative advocacy. As part of this work, they recognized a need for training that would enable local leaders in Romania’s animal welfare sector to effectively engage in public policy processes.

Pro Bono Workshop on Legislative Advocacy

To address this need, we facilitated a collaboration between Eurogroup for Animals and a top international law firm with a significant presence in Romania. The firm’s Bucharest office conducted a pro bono workshop specifically for ten NGO founders and directors. This training session covered the Romanian legislative process in detail, with a focus on practical methods for NGOs to contribute their expertise, voice their perspectives, and potentially influence legislative decisions.

Ellen Greve (Eurogroup for Animals) emphasised the importance of this collaboration, stating, “We are very grateful for the invaluable support of the lawyers who worked on this case. This collaboration has significantly bolstered our capacity to advocate for animal welfare in Romania, marking them as much-needed allies in our mission.”

The knowledge gained from this workshop provided participants with concrete insights and actionable strategies to engage with policy and legal frameworks more effectively. This strengthened their capacity for advocacy, empowering them to push for positive legislative change and build momentum toward improved animal welfare practices within Romania and across Europe.
