Running a nonprofit in Belgium can feel like navigating a maze of legal obligations, governance rules, and administrative responsibilities. From managing a board to ensuring compliance with reporting requirements, leaders of ASBL and AISBL organisations face a complex set of challenges throughout the year.
To help address these issues in a practical way, Pro Publico is organising a small, invitation-based working lunch and seminar for Belgian nonprofit leaders on 23 April 2026 in Brussels.
The event is designed to provide clear, practical answers to the real questions nonprofit leaders face every day, and to create a space where organisations can openly discuss the operational realities of running an association in Belgium.
A Practical Seminar: “One Year in the Life of an A(I)SBL”
The working lunch will feature a focused seminar led by Alix Degrez and Antoine Druetz (EY Law), two of the most experienced legal advisors in Belgium’s nonprofit sector.
Their session, “One Year in the Life of an A(I)SBL,” will walk participants through the typical legal and governance cycle of a Belgian association, highlighting key obligations, common pitfalls, and best practices.
Topics will include, among others :
- The Belgian legal framework for ASBL and AISBL
- Core principles of good governance and transparency
- The annual compliance cycle for associations
- Risk management and ongoing compliance obligations
- Internal policies, insurance, and transparency standards
Drawing on years of experience advising associations in Belgium, the speakers will provide practical examples and solutions that nonprofit leaders can apply immediately.
A Collaborative Initiative for the Nonprofit Sector
This seminar is part of a broader initiative to develop a Practical Guide for Belgian Nonprofits, a collaborative resource aimed at helping civil society organisations better understand their legal and operational responsibilities.
By gathering nonprofit leaders around the table, the event also offers an opportunity to identify the most pressing challenges facing the sector today and feed those insights into future working groups contributing to the guide.
Help Shape the Agenda
Participation in the working lunch is free of charge, but places are strictly limited.
To make the session as useful as possible, the organisers are inviting nonprofit leaders to submit the questions they most want answered. These questions will directly shape the discussion.
Questions can be very specific or broad, anything from technical compliance questions to strategic concerns about running an association.
How to Participate
To enter the draw for a place at the table, simply submit your question about running a nonprofit in Belgium before 1 April at [email protected]
Your question will help shape the session, and may secure you a seat at this exclusive working lunch.
