Pro bono support on HR-related legal questions
When workforce changes raised complex HR and employment questions, ILGA-Europe turned to high quality advice via legal pro bono assistance.
Navigating Change with the Right Support
Civil society organisations are no strangers to change. Funding cycles shift, teams restructure, and with those changes come questions that require careful, specialised legal input – questions that touch not just on policy, but on the people affected by them.
ILGA-Europe, the leading independent CSO advancing the human rights of LGBTI people across Europe and Central Asia and representing over 700 organisations in 54 countries, found itself navigating exactly this kind of moment. As the organisation worked through internal changes, it identified a need for expert legal guidance on HR-related matters affecting its team.
Pro Publico matched them with the Brussels office of a global law firm, that made available a full team of lawyers willing to offer their specialised assistance pro bono publico: free-of-charge in consideration of the societal value of ILGA Europe’s request.
A Considered, Timely Response
The support required careful attention to detail and an understanding of the practical realities facing ILGA-Europe’s team. The lawyers took on the engagement with the same rigour and care they bring to any other client matter, delivering clear, actionable legal guidance, helping the organisation navigate the questions at hand with confidence.
What stood out, according to ILGA-Europe, was not only the quality of the legal work but the care taken to understand the full context behind the request – and to explain the available options and their implications clearly.
The collaboration reflects what Pro Publico aims to enable: connecting civil society organisations facing complex, sometimes sensitive, legal questions with law firms who bring both expertise and genuine engagement to the table.
Why This Kind of Support Matters
HR and employment-related legal questions can carry real weight for civil society organisations – particularly for teams already stretched thin by funding pressures and reduced staffing. Having access to trusted, high-quality legal guidance when these questions arise allows organisations to make sound decisions and continue supporting their teams effectively.
That’s the kind of impact pro bono legal work can have when it’s well-matched and delivered with genuine commitment.
