Pro (Bono) Publico to Democratize Access to Justice
We are Pro Publico ASBL, a Brussels-based nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting civil society with top-tier law firms and public affairs consultancies providing their expertise pro bono publico. The organization aims to democratize access to justice and advocacy, enabling nonprofits and social impact organizations to achieve transformative change.
Recently, our co-founders Francesco Zatelli and Daria Sartori required legal support to formalize their mission, marking a unique moment where the matchmakers themselves became the beneficiaries.
The Need for Pro Bono Legal Support
As Pro Publico grew into a pan-European clearinghouse, it was needed to establish the organization as a Belgian non-profit association. This required detailed legal guidance on the Belgian non-profit models, drafting articles of association and navigating the complex registration process with the Belgian Court for Enterprises.
Recognizing the importance of expert legal assistance, the renowned global law firm Dentons stepped forward to support the cause through its Brussels office: their Europe Director for Pro Bono – Atanas Politov, and Europe Pro Bono Coordinator – Joanna Khatib, led the effort to connect Pro Publico with their experienced Brussels-based team led by partner Laurens Engelen with the support of associate Aurore Ancion and junior associate Martijn Segers.

How the Support Unfolded
The Dentons team began by explaining the intricacies of the Belgian non-profit legal framework, explaining the alternative AISBL and ASBL models so that Pro Publico’s co-founders understood the different implications and requirements. They meticulously advised on drafting the organization’s articles of association to align with its mission and values. Finally, they assisted with the formal registration of Pro Publico as a non-profit association with the Belgian Court for Enterprises, successfully completing the legal establishment of the organization.
Francesco Zatelli shared his thoughts on the experience: “We were delighted with the exceptional service provided by Dentons’ dedicated team of lawyers as they assisted us in every aspect of formally establishing our activities as a clearinghouse in Brussels. How Pro Bono Made a Difference
Thanks to the support of Dentons’ Brussels team, Pro Publico is now officially established as a Belgian ASBL. This milestone enables the organization to continue its matchmaking services, connecting even more civil society groups with pro bono legal and public affairs experts.
